Charles Dunbar | Tulip Variation #28`

Acrylic on polyester canvas | 2006

The genus tulipa and the genius of children are the inspiration for these tulips with lots of dots, big and small, simple coloring book tulips, childrenā€˜s tulips. Every six and seven-year-old child will recognize the style. The viewer can wander, ramble and tiptoe among the tulips. Tulips had found their way into some of my earlier paintings and it seemed a natural progression to take the individual flower for a subject. These paintings can be thought of as the 21st century equivalent to the wonderfully detailed flower paintings by 16th century Dutch painters.
