Charles Dunbar | Tulip Variation #11
acrylic on poloyester canvas | 2006
The genus tulipa and the genius of children are the inspiration for these tulips with lots of dots, big and small, simple coloring book tulips, children‘s tulips. Every six and seven-year-old child will recognize the style. The viewer can wander, ramble and tiptoe among the tulips. Tulips had found their way into some of my earlier paintings and it seemed a natural progression to take the individual flower for a subject. These paintings can be thought of as the 21st century equivalent to the wonderfully detailed flower paintings by 16th century Dutch painters.
