Mark Nesmith | Planet Tan

Painting
Oil on Canvas

Self absorption and narcissism are themes in several of my paintings. Planet Tan evolved from a conversation with my son in the car one day about tanning salons. We both think it’s ludicrous to pay money to lie on a tanning bed when sunlight is free, but the pursuit of idealized beauty is big business. In SE Texas alligators are plentiful, and the mental image I had of a gator tanning reminded me of the old Lubriderm lotion commercials with the crocodile.
