Richard Overfield | Dancing with Monsters: Dreams of the North
24k gold leaf acrylic on linen | 1998
TEXT: With one foot in the South& one foot in the North, one wet foot & one dry foot, I move with persistence up & down a continent, three countries, innumerable dreams. The voice of dreams asks for a vision of how to live. The Dragon of Ambivalence stares straight & hard at me from the Fortress of Truth. The Dragon wants to know how I can live with my soul in the South & my heart in the North. I’m not sure I want to answer questions asked by a yellow dragon I just met on the beach.
Note: At dawn after a dramatic storm the night before my 4 year old son & I were walking along a beach approaching Boot Point on Lasqueti Island, British Columbia when we noticed a peculiar stack of driftwood. I pointed it out to him & asked him what he thought it was. After a very short pause, he said it was a "sea monster." I wondered what it was doing on our beach & he told me it was looking for a home.
