Dan Broxon | Asherah

Sculpture
cast bronze | 2011

The direct spiritual ancestor of Mary, Asherah is depicted in her traditional pose. She was a household deity often formed from a thrown clay base and for a period of centuries was worshiped as the consort of Yahweh. Thousands have been found in excavations in Israel. Originally I made this piece as a funerary urn. It has a threaded opening on the underside.
